Temperature Conversion Formulas

Unlike length or area, temperature scales don't share a common zero point, so each conversion uses its own formula rather than a simple multiplier:

Celsius to Fahrenheit
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
Fahrenheit to Celsius
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
Celsius to Kelvin
K = °C + 273.15
Kelvin to Celsius
°C = K − 273.15
Celsius to Rankine
°R = (°C + 273.15) × 9/5

Example Calculation

To convert 20°C to Fahrenheit: (20 × 9/5) + 32 = 68°F. To convert 0 Kelvin (absolute zero) to Celsius: 0 − 273.15 = −273.15°C.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 and add 32. For example, 20°C × 9/5 + 32 = 68°F.

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value, then multiply by 5/9. For example, (68°F − 32) × 5/9 = 20°C.

0 Kelvin, known as absolute zero, is equal to −273.15°C.
